Tshwane AR club – wind down

Hi,

Tshwane AR club was formed a couple of years ago to bring inexpensive AR events to members and community at a time when there was great interest in AR. We served this purpose with the dedicated support and effort from our members, however over the last year or two the interest in AR dwindled to the extent that is not viable to present such events any longer. Scouting and putting together an event is more fun than the event itself, but takes enormous effort and time from those members involved. Since neither the resources nor interest in participating in these event are prevalent we have come to a point that the club has served its purpose.

Members have moved into single disciplines like Mountain biking, Trail running and Orienteering and we keep on bumping into each other at these events. We have tried a number of options of which the multi discipline Fun AR proved the most successful, but still not to the level to continue doing so.

So, sadly after several discussions with committee members present and past we have decided to wind down the club. Obviously if there are members that would like to step up to the plate and make it work you are most welcome to discuss it with us.

I want to thank all those that contributed in a big way to make the club a success and names like Hardy, Thursia, Oupa Gert, Nigel, Nando, Brendan, Leon vd W, Leon S, Nadine, Alec, Willem, Carine, Nicol, Cobus, Daleen comes to mind. Also those I did not mention thank you for your contributions and participation.

We will continue seeing each other at events and maybe come up with something great.

Greetings from the current committee, Nando, Brendan, Leon, Francois

Orienteering

Bush orienteering on Sunday at Hennops

Tue Jun 23, 2015 12:53 am (PDT) . Posted by "Lisa from advracesa

Just as going to a run or a ride is training for events; so are orienteering
events excellent training for adventure racing navigation.

As far as the annual orienteering calendar goes, we’ve just started the Bush
series (previously known as the colour-coded series because each course
distance and difficulty is assigned a ‘colour’ name) and on Sunday AR Club
is hosting the second Bush event at Hennops Farm.

Bush events are my favourite because they’re longer than the Urban events,
the terrain can be really technical (especially as you can travel
cross-country, not on paths) and the navigational difficulty goes up a
notch. It is more challenging to interpret contour lines and vegetation
features than buildings and flowerbeds.

Each event has five courses ranging from short (2km) and easy (checkpoints
on paths) for children to the most technical Blue and Brown courses.

A WARNING! Don’t be deceived by the seemingly ‘short’ distances. Sunday’s
longest Brown event is ‘only’ 7km ‘as the crow flies’. You’ll not only
travel a bit more distance in reality, but you have to navigate your way
around fom checkpoint to checkpoint (we call them controls). I’ll put my
money on it to say that it would take an inexperienced person – even if you
are able to run faster than the roadrunner – over 2.5hrs to complete the
Brown course (if they make it all the way around). Courses close at 13h00 so
someone will come and find you 😉

So. If you’re new to this, start with a light green or green course. Rather
complete courses successfully and move up as you gain experience. You’re
also welcome to complete a course and then grab another map from a ‘higher’
course to try some more challenging checkpoints.

Whether you’re your team’s navigator or not, come (and encourage your
navigator to come to orienteering regularly to sharpen their skills).

Here’s the event sheet for Sunday:
http://www.orienteering.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Bush2_Hennops28June
2015.pdf

Although you can enter on the day, we appreciate it if you pre-entry so that
we get our map printing numbers more accurate for each course. If we print
for 50 people and 100 show up, I’m sure you can see the problem.

Here’s some What is Orienteering? info:

We hope to see you on Sunday morning.
